I know this isn’t the type of content I usually share, but I wanted to talk about something close to my heart: taking vacations. Due to the high costs, I often see people in the planning community discussing how difficult it is to vacation (or even attend planner conferences). With a little creativity and careful planning, it’s possible to enjoy a 4-day vacation for a family of four for under $2,000! In this blog post, I’ll share budget-friendly tips and tricks to help you plan memorable and affordable summer vacation plans.
Choosing the Destination
One of the first steps in planning a budget-friendly vacation is selecting a cost-effective vacation destination. Opt for locations that offer plenty of free or low-cost activities and accommodations. Here are some excellent choices:
- National State Parks:
- Yosemite National Park, California: Famous for its stunning granite cliffs, waterfalls, and giant sequoias, Yosemite offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife viewing. Entrance fees are reasonable, and camping or staying in a nearby budget hotel can keep costs low.
- Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina: This park is renowned for its diverse plant and animal life and ancient mountains. Activities include hiking, fishing, and visiting historical sites. Entry is free, and numerous affordable lodging options exist, including cabins and campgrounds.
- Beach Towns:
- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Known for its long stretches of sandy beaches, family-friendly attractions, and vibrant boardwalk, Myrtle Beach offers a mix of free beach days and affordable entertainment options like mini-golf and local festivals.
- Gulf Shores, Alabama: With beautiful white sand beaches and various outdoor activities such as fishing, kayaking, and hiking in Gulf State Park, Gulf Shores is a budget-friendly beach destination. Affordable vacation rentals and local eateries help keep costs down.
- Small Cities & Towns:
- Asheville, North Carolina: Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is known for its vibrant arts scene, historic architecture, and outdoor activities. Enjoy free activities like hiking in the nearby mountains or exploring the city’s many art galleries and street performances.
- St. Michaels, Maryland: A charming waterfront town on the Eastern Shore, St. Michaels offers a relaxing getaway with activities like kayaking, visiting local museums, and exploring the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Enjoy fresh seafood at local eateries and stay in affordable B&Bs or vacation rentals.
- Lewes, Delaware: Known for its historic charm and proximity to the beach, Lewes offers a mix of free beach days, walking tours of historic sites, and exploring nearby Cape Henlopen State Park. To reduce travel costs, find budget-friendly accommodations in local motels or vacation rentals.
Travel and Accommodation
Travel and accommodation are often the most significant expenses when planning a vacation. To find cheap flights, use fare comparison websites and set up price alerts with Google Flights to monitor and book when prices drop. Consider alternative travel methods like driving or taking a train if they are more cost-effective.
When it comes to accommodations, think outside the box. Airbnb and budget hotels can offer comfortable lodging at a fraction of the cost of high-end hotels. Booking in advance can also secure lower rates. Additionally, consider staying at campgrounds or renting a cabin in a national park for a unique and affordable lodging experience.
If you can’t travel during the summer months, consider exploring a weekend in September. While the kids would have recently returned to school, taking advantage of lower costs and having them miss Friday and Monday is an option. This may not be ideal, but it’s a way to enjoy nice weather and less crowded sites, and upgrading your stay is the best way to get the lowest price.
Planning the Itinerary
Creating a balanced itinerary with free or low-cost activities is a good idea to stick to your budget. Here’s a sample itinerary for a family with two kids (ages 10 and 13) visiting St. Michaels, Maryland:
Day 1: Arrival and Exploration
- Morning: Arrive and check into your budget-friendly accommodation
- Afternoon: Explore downtown St. Michaels; visit local shops and street performers
- Evening: Dinner at a local seafood restaurant
Day 2: Outdoor Adventure
- Morning: Kayaking on the Chesapeake Bay (rentals available at reasonable rates)
- Afternoon: Picnic lunch by the waterfront
- Evening: Attend a free outdoor concert or event in town
Day 3: Culture and History
- Morning: Visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (reasonable entrance fee)
- Afternoon: Take a walking tour of historic St. Michaels. Remember to carry your reusable water bottles and pack snacks to cut down on costs!
- Evening: Dinner at a family-friendly restaurant with affordable options
Day 4: Nature and Relaxation
- Morning: Visit nearby Tilghman Island for a scenic drive and exploration
- Afternoon: Relax and play at a local park or go for a swim in the Bay
- Evening: Cook dinner at your accommodation and enjoy a family game night without spending much money
Food and Dining
Food can be a significant expense on vacation that easily causes extra costs, but there are plenty of ways to save. Cooking at your accommodation can drastically cut down on dining costs. If you’re staying in an Airbnb home rental or a cabin, plan and prepare simple meals to enjoy as a family. Shopping at the local grocery to pack picnics for outings can also be a fun and frugal way to eat. You can also look at hotels that offer free breakfast, such as Residence Inn by Marriott.
When dining out, look for local diners and eateries that offer reasonably priced food—research online reviews to find hidden gems that provide great value. Meal planning and budgeting for food expenses can help you avoid overspending. Remember, there are many places where kids eat free! Check out this list by Care.
Transportation
Getting around your destination efficiently can save you both time and money. However, if you’re looking at destinations within driving distance, you can drive your own car for a road trip! Once you arrive, public transportation, walking, and biking are excellent budget-friendly options. Many cities have reliable and affordable public transit systems that can take you to most attractions.
Renting scooters can also be a fun and cost-effective way to explore small towns and cities. Many destinations offer scooter rentals at reasonable rates, providing a convenient mode of transportation for short distances.
If rental cars is important, shop around for the best deals and book in advance. Lastly, consider using ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft for short trips, but be mindful of surge pricing during peak times.
Miscellaneous Savings
To stay within your budget, set a daily spending limit and stick to it. This will help you manage your expenses and avoid unnecessary splurges. Regarding souvenirs, opt for meaningful and affordable items rather than expensive keepsakes. I like to collect magnets of places I visit and put them on my fridge. These are generally less than $10. Another great option is collecting postcards, typically less than $2.
Utilize rewards programs, airline miles, or loyalty programs to save money on future trips. Many credit cards offer points or cash back on travel-related purchases, which can add up over time and provide significant savings. My favorite is the Chase-Sapphire card. Within one year, combined with their intro offer, I accumulated enough points for two round-trip international flights tickets from Washington, DC, to Aruba.
A memorable and enjoyable summer vacation doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. By choosing budget-friendly destinations, finding affordable travel and accommodations, planning an itinerary with low-cost activities, and being mindful of food and transportation expenses, you can create a fantastic family getaway for a total cost of under $2,000.
