The way that you treat yourself mentally has a lot more significance than most people give it credit for. Of course, there are times when people might say mean things to themselves out of habit because you hate the way a dress look on you or you said something stupid in front of your boss, but the consequences are much farther-reaching than you might believe. In the following paragraphs, I share the importance of positive self-talk.
It Can Help You to See Yourself
What do you tell yourself in the mirror when you look at yourself? This might be the first time you’ve ever had to think about that question, but it’s one that you should be aware of and how your answer will make a difference to yourself daily. Whenever you tell yourself something negative, you’re repeating powerful mantras that can influence your self-esteem and how you see yourself in the world.
Unfortunately, it’s generally going to be a skewed view if it’s constantly bathed in negativity. This makes it impossible for you to be completely aware of yourself and blocks you from being open to others.
You will get a complete picture of who you are when you spend your time saying uplifting things about yourself. This isn’t to say that you should avoid dealing with things you consider to be faulted. It just means you see a lot more than those things alone.
It Gives You More Confidence
Allowing yourself to see all you have to offer and what you have conquered helps to boost your confidence. That’s because you are directly acknowledging the good things about yourself instead of focusing on the areas where you feel you fall short. You can make a list to look back on and title it Brag List! Then, reflect on each aspect, and think about the times when those attributes helped you overcome something or solve a problem.
If you’ve come this far on what you know now, imagine how well things can go when you’ve continued learning and improving yourself. Finally, see where you will be based on these positive things you’ve discovered.
It Helps Reduce Stress
Positive self-talk also helps you control your stress. Stress can be paralyzing, but it doesn’t have to be. When you feel overwhelmed, pull out a sheet of paper and write down the things you want. Then, put in a few more manageable goals that you know you can achieve in the short term, and put all your energy into crushing those goals. Make sure that you are realistic about the ones that you select.
Getting a few things done and crossed off your list can do wonders for how you feel about the attainability of your goals. Just know that you have to take it all one day at a time. Cross out 2 – 3 things on your list, and return to some of your bigger goals. You’ll find yourself more relaxed and ready to tackle bigger goals. Before you know it, you will have completed it all!
It Helps You Maintain Control Over Emotions
It’s also important to remember that things won’t always be perfect. There can be all kinds of little snags that can push back your timeline for completing things. Use positive self-talk to remind yourself of how resilient you indeed are. Find inspiration in the progress that you’ve made to date. The more practice you have learned to control your emotions, the more success you will have. Remember to remain patient and kind to yourself; you will get there.
Ready to level up your relationship with yourself and reach your full potential? Start talking to yourself in a positive and supportive way by highlighting the things you love about yourself, your accomplishments, and what you are grateful for. Keep these in mind the next time you need a pick-me-up!
